NOTE An का प्रयोग स्‍वर ध्वनि के पूर्व किया जाता है।

1 one एक A cup of coffee, please. ￮ We’ve got an apple, a banana and two oranges.
2 used when you talk about one example of sth for the first time पहली बार किसी वस्‍तु या प्राणी के उल्‍लेख में प्रयुक्त I saw a dog chasing a cat this morning. ￮ Have you got a dictionary (= any dictionary)?
3 used for saying what kind of person or thing sb/sth is किसी व्‍यक्ति या वस्‍तु के वर्ग की सदस्‍यता दर्शाने के लिए प्रयुक्त He’s a doctor. ￮ ‘Is that an eagle?’ ‘No, it’s a falcon.’
4 (used with prices, rates, measurements) each (क़ीमतें, दरें और माप तोल बताने वाले प्रत्‍येक शब्‍द के साथ प्रयुक्त) प्रत्‍येक I usually drink two liters of water a day. ￮ twice a week ￮ 80 kilometers an hour.
5 used with some expressions of quantity मात्रा या संख्‍या बताने वाले कुछ शब्‍दों के साथ प्रयुक्त a lot of money ￮ a few cars
6 used when you are talking about a typical example of sth किसी वस्‍तु के प्रतिनिधि उदाहरण के उल्‍लेख के लिए प्रयुक्त An elephant can live for up to eighty years.

NOTE  इस अर्थ के लिए बहुवचन रूप भी प्रयोग किया जा सकता है—Elephants can live for up to eighty years.
